Believe it or not, there really aren’t any. High fiber foods are the only foods that bind or ‘sap’ your vitamins, and minerals. Yet the importance of fiber requires that these foods should be in the diet. I am not suggesting that you want to load your child up with sugar, cakes, and candy. But these foods can be eaten occasionally without destroying your child. Just remember that these are potent sources of calories and often contain few other nutrients. For the calorie-conscious, over-weight child, these extra carbohydrates are just as well left aside.
When these sugary foods are included, try not to make them a special reward; that only encourages the thinking that sweets are to be praised and desired above all other foods. You can, however, include it with a cake or your prize-winning pie. This diet can be quite successful, and the balance suggested here can be used as the basis for other diets as well, substituting grains and vegetables for milk (for allergic child) and for meat (for the vegetarian). Just be aware of what nutrients your child might lack from modified diet (calcium, iron, and vitamin B12) and supply it from other sources.
