Make aloud noise. Many women now routinely carry a whistle that makes a piercing sound or scream “police” to attract attention.
Run, but only if there is a safe haven near you. Any attempt to flee that fails may make the situation worse by angering the rapist.
Stall the attacker by speaking calmly and rationally to him. Try not to lead, cry, or otherwise show terror that may be just the reaction he is hoping to elicit.
Urinate or omit. If nothing else works, try something that may repulse your attacker. Saying you has a sexually transmitted disease or AIDS may also scare him off, but it may engage him, too.
Collect evidence. Do not shower, bathe, or douche; if you remove your clothes, put them in a plastic bag and seal it. Although your instinct may be to physically wash every memory of the event, you will also be destroying evidence that can be used to identify and convict your assailant.
