It is estimated that up to2 percent of Americans use psychotherapeutic drugs tranquilizers, sleeping pills, stimulants, and painkillers. Because of the mind-altering capability of these drugs, they have a potential for misuse. Misuse becomes abuse when these drugs are taken in greater amounts or for purposes other than those for which they were prescribed. Misuse can result in a psychological or physical dependency or both. Although these drugs can bring relief of symptoms such as anxiety, sleeplessness, and pain, they also have side effects and hazards that should be weighed against their benefits.
